The Gum bichromate process
Gum bichromate photography is one of these forgotten alternative processes. It is a medium which allows the photographer to print
with several kind of pigments. It is a blend of the mechanical constraints of light in photography, chemistry and the freedom of
expression in painting or drawing.
De gomafdruk
De gomafdruk is een kontaktdruk (negatief rechtstreeks op het papier). Dit betekent dat het negatief zo groot is als het beeld zelf. Het beeld wordt gevormd met een emulsie van Arabische Gom, lichtgevoelige kaliumzouten en pigmenten, met UV belicht op aquarelpapier, ontwikkeld in water.
La gomme bichromatée
Dans ce procédé d’impression à la gomme bichromatée, la lumière tanne le bichromate qui emprisonne les pigments et constitue l’image au sein de la couche elle-même. Faire apparaître l’image revient à éliminer à l’eau le surplus de matière dans lequel elle est enfouie. Cette intervention chimique permet de travailler l’échelle des valeurs, de créer en quelque sort la lumière, le ton et le contraste, de créer une harmonie interne à l’image et même de donner une photographie très expressionniste.
